Instructor: Dr. Asaad Al-Saleh, Assistant Professor, Indiana University
Thursdays, April 7, 14, 21 and 28
Time: 6:00pm to 8:30pm
This course gives students the chance to understand how our modern age (with its revolutionary communication tools) affects the way the Quran is being read, quoted and misquoted. Students will encounter the diverse ways the Quran has been interpreted and the reasons behind such diversity, as well as the impact of tafsir and social movements.
While trying to answer these and other big questions, the course will survey the ways in which some Muslim groups use the Quran, and the danger of claiming one interpretation and forcing it upon the Quran. Students are expected to engage in discussing verses of the Quran, to explore meanings, and share their views about how its themes and concepts are presented. Knowledge of the Arabic language is not required.
